    Johnny Chan biography

Johnny Chan, born in 1957 in Guangzhou, China, is one of poker's most legendary figures, celebrated as the only player besides Doyle Brunson to win the World Series of Poker Main Event in consecutive years and, remarkably, the last player ever to accomplish that back-to-back feat, winning in both 1987 and 1988. His family moved from China to Hong Kong in 1962, then to Phoenix, Arizona in 1968, before settling in Houston, Texas in 1973, where his family operated a restaurant business.

Chan left the University of Houston at the age of 21 to pursue a career as a professional gambler in Las Vegas, quickly establishing himself in the city's high-stakes cash game and tournament circles. He earned the nickname "the Orient Express" after a legendary performance at Bob Stupak's 1981 American Cup, where he defeated nine opponents in under an hour, a display of speed and dominance that became part of poker folklore.

Chan's 1987 and 1988 WSOP Main Event victories made him the first foreign-born player to win the title, and he remains the only player to win it back-to-back aside from Brunson, a distinction that has never been repeated since 1988. Over his career he has accumulated 10 WSOP bracelets, tying him with Doyle Brunson and Erik Seidel for third on the all-time bracelet list.

Beyond poker, Chan achieved mainstream cultural recognition through a cameo appearance as himself in the acclaimed 1998 film "Rounders" opposite Matt Damon and Edward Norton, a role that introduced him to audiences far beyond the poker world. He has authored instructional books on the game and owns a fast-food restaurant franchise at the Stratosphere Hotel in Las Vegas.

Chan was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 2002, and his live tournament winnings exceed $8.7 million as of 2025, a career total spanning more than four decades at the top of the game.
