Scotty Nguyen biography
Scotty Nguyen was born on October 28, 1962, in Nha Trang, Vietnam, and was sent by his mother first to Taiwan and then, at age 14, to the United States amid the turmoil of the Vietnam War, arriving with a sponsor family in Orange County, California. After being expelled from school for frequenting underground poker games, Nguyen attended dealer school at 21 and began working in the poker room at Harrah's, initially earning modest wages while losing money of his own at the tables.
Completely broke heading into the 1998 World Series of Poker, Nguyen received backing from fellow player Mike Matusow to cover one-third of a satellite buy-in, and he went on to win the Main Event outright for $1,000,000, splitting a third of the winnings with Matusow per their arrangement. On the final hand, after defeating Kevin McBride, Nguyen delivered his now-legendary line, "You call, it's gonna be all over, baby!", cementing a catchphrase that has followed him ever since.
He went on to win five career WSOP bracelets, including the prestigious $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. World Championship in 2008, and was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 2013. His career has included both triumph and hardship, including the death of his brother in Vietnam shortly after his 1998 win and periods of significant financial difficulty during his career; following criticism of his televised conduct at the 2008 H.O.R.S.E. event, Nguyen publicly apologized and stopped drinking alcohol during televised games.
He remains one of the most colorful and instantly recognizable personalities in poker history.
